The C Score (2.0)

Another chance to see the champions

Posted on: September 14, 2008

Mary Lou Retton, Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin will be among the gymnasts participating in the second annual “Frosted Pink”, a charity TV special about women’s cancers. The show is filming today.

While I commend the gymnasts for using their celebrity to draw attention to important causes, I am always a little weirded out by breast-cancer awareness month and other awareness organizations that take this “pink” approach to serious diseases. I think it’s more than a little patronizing to send teddy bears and pink Oreos to women who are suffering from a serious illness. (Can you imagine if they sent men similar things for prostate cancer?!?)

Barbara Ehrenreich (who is otherwise often extremely annoying) wrote a great article about this phenomenon.

The special will air October 12th on ABC.

**Sorry for the political off-topic-ness of this post.

breast cancer is an awful disease, but it seems to have turned into this wierd fad or something. even Southpark had an episode on it:

About The C Score

First there was A score and B score, now D score and E score. Where is the C score? Right here. In the form of my random thoughts about women's artistic gymnastics.
